Inductance In Series
There are two methods of combination of inductors in series. If the coils having inductance L1 and L2 are connected in such way that when the current enters the dot end of the coil L1 and leaves, it must enter L2 at its dotted which results in the addition of fluxes of two coils, then this type of series connection is known as series adding.
But, if they are connected in a manner that when the current enters the dot end of coils L1 and leaves, it must enter L2 at undotted end, which makes fluxes of coils oppose each other, then this types of series connection is known as series opposing.
A. Series aiding
In this type of connection, the total emf induced in each of the coils L1 and L2 is due to coil's self inductance and the emf induced by the other coil. So,
